It was widely speculated that after Tuesday morning's training session, Adams had notified the players of his decision to quit. The former Arsenal and England defender met with club chairman Ivor Beeks later in the day.
A run of nine consecutive league games without a win ultimately forced him to end his reign after a full year in charge. In that time Adams was unable to steer the club away from relegation last season. Despite a brief spell at the top of League Two in September, Wycombe plummeted to 17th place.
"It has been a good experience, an eduaction, and I believe the present team can develop and be a success in the future," said Adams in a public statement issued by his agent.
Adams may now choose to complete a sports psychology degree, before considering any return to management.
