The 38-year-old was caretaker manager of QPR for a spell three years ago and was an option to replace assistant manager Martin Kuhl who resigned earlier this month.
But Ainsworth said: "It has probably come a little bit too early.
"I did the coaching/playing and managing/playing at QPR and that told me the job's too difficult.
"I'm 100 per cent into everything I do. I don't think I could be 50 per cent into one and 50 per cent into the other.
"It's 100 per cent as a player or 100 per cent as a coach and at the moment I'm telling myself I still want to play."
