Chester made it five wins on the trot to virtually guarantee their League Two status and severely dent Wycombe's hopes of an automatic promotion spot with a home 1-0 victory.
Captain Stewart Drummond struck the second half winner in a game of few clear cut chances as the home side continued their impressive recent revival.
The match had got off to a slow start and it took until the 12th minute for the first effort on goal as Drummond saw a header saved by keeper Frank Talia.
A lofted pass from Drummond on 26 minutes created a half chance for Derek Asamoah, but the striker just failed to connect with an attempted volley on the turn as the ball came over his shoulder.
Asamoah twice pulled shots wide of the post as Chester made most of the running in an otherwise uneventful opening half.
The visitors threatened more in the first couple of minutes of the second half than they had in the whole of the first period.
First, Tommy Mooney forced keeper Chris MacKenzie into a save with a shot from the edge of the box, and then Kevin Betsy shot over from six yards out after Jermaine Easter had carved open the home defence with a positive run.
At the other end Jake Edwards headed a good opportunity over the bar, and a Tom Curtis shot, which appeared destined for the top corner, was brilliantly tipped away by Talia.
The deadlock was broken on 64 minutes when a free-kick was swung in from the right and David Artell rose highest to power a header goalwards which Drummond touched in from close range.
The visitors almost drew level on 77 minutes when Mooney's left foot shot from the edge of the box was brilliantly saved by MacKenzie. Two minutes later the keeper was rooted to the spot as Stefan Oakes' superbly taken free-kick went inches past the post.
Ben Davies shot wide with a late chance to kill the game, and Chester were nearly made to pay as a misdirected header from Drummond had his keeper struggling and just went wide, but the home side hung on for a deserved win.
