An own goal by Wycombe Wanderers' Russell Martin 18 minutes from time settled an entertaining encounter in Hereford United's favour.

The Bulls' third successive win boosted their promotion hopes, but Wycombe maintain their place in the play-off spots despite a first-ever defeat against Hereford.

Wycombe twice came close to opening the scoring in the first 11 minutes.

Wayne Brown pulled off a fine save to deny Chris Herd and then John McCombe did well to block an effort from the dangerous Scott McGleish.

Hereford's Dean Beckwith powered a header just over from Clint Easton's free-kick and the stretching Gary Hooper just failed to reach a Theo Robinson cross.

With both sides intent on playing good football, McGleish had a shot blocked by Trent McClenahan and Hooper was then out of luck when his shot was headed off the line by Martin.

On the stroke of half-time only a fine save by Frank Fielding kept out Robinson's shot and McCombe's header from the resulting corner was booted off the line by Dave McCracken.

The goal-line clearances continued after the break but this time at the other end, with the Bulls skipper Ben Smith hacking a Herd header away.

As play continued end to end Hooper was denied by a fine save from Fielding after substitute Mike Williamson's slip set him clear.

But Wycombe's luck was out in the 72nd minute. Easton's free-kick into the Wycombe area looked to be posing no danger, Martin could have headed a clearance anywhere, but directed the ball into the top corner of his own net.

Wycombe defender Leon Johnson fired against a post after Brown had done brilliantly to parry Hooper's deflection from a Stefan Oakes free-kick.

Hereford then had to defend in numbers in the closing stages to hold on to three crucial points in their promotion bid.
