Walsall's amazing start to the season continued as they beat off a strong challenge from their nearest rivals Wycombe to go five points clear at the top of League Two.
The Saddlers have now won all seven of their home league matches without conceding a goal, although this was a very stern test against a Wycombe side who have won four of their away matches so far this season.
It was a top-of-the-table battle worthy of the name in which the Chairboys had a lot of the play but failed to trouble Walsall goalkeeper Clayton Ince as much as they should have done.
Perhaps it was as well for Walsall that Wycombe were without leading scorer Jermaine Easter, but the home defence still deserved a great deal of credit with youngster Scott Dann and right-back Craig Pead deserving particular praise.
Dean Keates battled away in midfield for the Saddlers and despite the away side's early dominance, Ince had only one save to make when he turned over a shot from Matt Bloomfield.
Walsall came more into it midway through the first half and Mark Wright fired wide at the far post from a fine cross by Kris Taylor.
Nine minutes later Walsall took the lead when the persistence of Daniel Fox forced a corner on the left-hand side.
Wright's inswinging flag-kick proved difficult for the Wycombe defence to deal with and striker Hector Sam nipped in to head his second goal of the season.
A moment before half-time, Martin Butler had a shot saved by Jamie Young after dispossessing defender Sam Stockley.
In the second half Wycombe manager Paul Lambert abandoned the 3-5-2 system that had been operated and reverted to 4-4-2.
But Walsall boss Richard Money responded by bringing on veteran midfielder Mark Kinsella for Taylor in the 54th minute and seven minutes later the move paid dividends.
Wright played the ball in to Kinsella who went round a defender before sending a low 20-yard shot well out of the reach of keeper jamie Young for Walsall's second goal.
Wycombe continued to have the better of exchanges, with Ince making a close-range save from Mooney.
Wycombe should have pulled a goal back after 75 minutes when a pass from Kevin Betsy found substitute Ian Stonebridge unmarked but he fired the ball well over.
With Wycombe pressing forward, Walsall occasionally threatened on the break and Keates sent a header wide from a cross by Pead in the 82nd minute.
Despite a magnificent battle by Wycombe, the Saddlers fended them off and kept their remarkable home record intact.
