Sergio Torres got Wycombe's season up and running with the only goal of the game against Bury at Adams Park. The Argentine headed home after 69 minutes to give the Chairboys three valuable points.
Wycombe shaded a fairly lifeless first half and created the majority of chances. Last season's top scorer at Adams Park, Jermaine Easter, was on the end of two of them, his first opportunity coming after eight minutes when a vicious strike from ten yards looked goalbound until deflecting wide for a corner.
He then went close again just before the interval after Tom Williams' cross from the left was turned back along the six-yard line. Easter prodded goalwards but his effort lacked power and was easily collected by Jim Provett in the Bury goal.
In between those chances Bury's Richie Morgan did put the ball in the net after Williams was caught in possession just outside his area, but the Bury marksman was flagged offside.
Bury's most persistent threat had come from high balls into the area and the same tactic nearly paid off at the start of the second half, when Dave Challinor's long throw found its way to Baker but his drive was blocked.
Both sides had shouts for penalties after that but Wanderers were building up a head of steam and Torres and Scott McGleish both had good chances before Torres headed home Williams' cross after 69 minutes.
Bury had another shout for a penalty when Leon Johnson handled in the area after 80 minutes, but Wycombe could and should have put the game beyond doubt with two excellent John Sutton chances.
